Vietnam entry visa from China at train station
I intend to go to China first and then to Vietnam, but if I do the visa on arrival, the problem is that I won't arrive at an airport but at a train station. Can I apply and get a visa at the embassy in London before I go to China.

You are correct, visa on arrival is available for air entry only. You can apply for a visa at the Vietnam Embassy in London before you go to China.
Please note that from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016, UK citizen can travel Vietnam without visa within 15 days. You might not need a visa if you will stay in the country less than 15 days. Learn more about Vietnam visa waiver
